KBOO Community Radio

Painting the KBOO Mural

It all started when a friend told me about a web design job at the station. The staff was really interested in using my illustrations as a theme for their site, so I went on to create an illustrated web site that was 100% unique to KBOO. While doing this, the station manager mentioned that it would be cool to put an 8x8ft. sign of their logo on the front of the building. After bumper stickers, t-shirts, membership card mailers, banners, web logos, print advertising and a hand-made KBOO font were made… the opportunity finally arose to paint the 8x8ft. sign. As a way to boost local awareness of KBOO as a community radio station, I suggested that I prepare a 50ft x 14ft mural with black lines and get the entire community to help paint it. After a design was finalized, we submitted a grant proposal to the Regional Arts & Culture Council of Portland, who awarded KBOO with a $1,000 grant. On October 16th & 17th 2009, community members and KBOO volunteers helped paint the mural with color. After the rainy season stopped, the mural was completed in 2010.
